5 Other Myths about Medicare

Medicare is a lot of new information to process at the beginning.

Here are five common things most people don't realize about Medicare.

  1. Original Medicare covers everything. False.

Only about 80% of your healthcare costs are covered. The rest is on you.

  2. There's only one enrollment period. There are four, actually. Your first opportunity is the Initial Enrollment Period. You'll have seven months to enroll. It stretches from three months before your birthday month to three months after.

  3. Original Medicare includes prescription drug coverage. False.

You have to enroll and pay separately for Part D prescription drug coverage. But many Medicare Advantage plans include Parts A (hospital coverage), B (doctor visits) and D (drug coverage).

  4. A Medicare Supplement is just like a Medicare Advantage plan. False.

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, a Medicare Supplement isn't a health plan. It's insurance that covers many out-of-pocket expenses Original Medicare doesn't cover.

  5. I have to enroll when I turn 65. False. If you're working past 65, as long as you have group or individual coverage, you can wait to enroll in Medicare.

Medicare Enrollment is a window in time.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) — When you are first eligible for Medicare, you have a seven-month period to sign up. This seven-month period begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes the month you turn 65, and ends three months after you turn 65. If you qualify because you’re receiving disability benefits, it starts three months before your 25th month of disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) and lasts seven months.
